In 2015, Brookside Baptist Church (BBC) in Kanata began an ‘English as a Second Language’ program and is now seeing eternal results!
BBC has two experienced ESL teachers plus keen and capable helpers. Students are divided into beginner and intermediate groups and while they learn to speak English, time is spent also on teaching about Canada and its customs. Topics include gardening, preparing for winter, holidays, government, and Canadian expressions like “eh”.
At the end of each 8-week session, students are invited to bring their families to a truly international potluck with food from Asia, Africa, Finland, the Middle East, South America and more.
Each session averages 15 – 20 students and connections have developed with several. In the winter of 2016, BBC ran a Christianity Explored (CE) program as an outreach and three Asians came. They knew nothing about our beliefs and each week were full of questions.
In November 2016, an ESL women’s Bible study began. What keen students they are! Each week 4 – 6 women meet to study the Gospel of Luke. Two women have committed their lives to Jesus, one of whom attended CE. A third is gaining assurance of her salvation. A Turkish man began to attend as many of the church activities as he could in order to practice his English; he has made friends and is keenly seeking to understand Christianity.
ESL provides a great opportunity to reach into the lives of new Canadians. Let’s pray for Brookside.
